Department of Mass Communications

Studying media and journalism program prepares you to work as a professional in public relations, journalism, telecommunications or in emerging media technologies.

This bachelor’s degree program balances a broad knowledge of the liberal arts and natural sciences with the professional and theoretical preparation needed by today’s media professionals. Internships are necessary to complete the student’s professional training, along with experience with campus media:

  • The Voice: the nationally-recognized weekly student newspaper
  • BUSN, student-produced television programming
  • BUNow, student-run online news portal
  • WHSK-FM, student-managed radio station with call-in and music programs

Other opportunities are available through active chapters of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), and the National Broadcasting Society-Alpha Epsilon Rho (NBS-AERho).

BA Degree and Tracks:

Telecommunications — Studies include video production, video editing, broadcast journalism, programming, and management. Students can also study sports, documentaries, corporate video, or dramatic/comedy production.

Journalism — Studies include online journalism, editing, feature writing, magazine editing, and production, public affairs reporting, and broadcast journalism.

Public Relations — Studies include public relations theory and practice, publicity and public relations, PR cases, and problems, as well as options in video production, feature writing, online journalism, introduction to business, economics, marketing principles, and practices and advertising management. As a capstone, students participate in a mass communications seminar, practicum or internship.

Emergent Media — Studies in emergent media develop the skills employers are looking for in web design, visual communication, social media, and other new media technologies.
To earn a bachelor’s degree, students must complete the necessary semester hours in three competency areas: writing, professional skills, and theoretical foundations. All majors take foundation courses in mass communications and the popular arts, news writing, media law and ethics, and either social foundations of mass media or research methods in mass communications.

Admission Requirements

Admission to our media and journalism program requires an application, which can be found on the department web page, and is subject to the chair’s approval. Students should exhibit strong writing, visual and creative qualities, and/or a record of interest and participation in media-related extracurricular activities. You’ll be notified of your acceptance as a media and journalism major as quickly as possible.

High school students interested in a media and journalism related career should become involved in school media. These include newspapers, yearbooks, magazines, radio, video or television production and programs. The committed student can gain valuable experience through volunteer efforts with community groups, such as chambers of commerce, tourism offices and other non-profit organizations.

Minors & Certificates

Emergent Media
This minor will enable students to develop a strong foundation in emerging media, particularly in the areas of new communication technologies, website development, and design, and visual communications within a mass communications context. In today’s media-centric world employers are looking for individuals with multiple skills in the latest media use and design, media literacy, and web design and development. The minor consists of 18 semester hours.

Public Relations 

This minor equips students entering the workforce by allowing them to determine communication objectives, key publics, and recommended communication tactics for print, broadcast, and online environments.  The Commission on Public Relations Education recommends that undergraduate programs emphasize and strengthen writing and communication skills associated with storytelling, editing, and media relations. The minor is comprised of 18 credits.
