Checking Out Mitski’s Compelling New Studio Album

Indie singer-songwriter Mitski released her seventh studio album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, this past Friday, September 15th. Mitski captivated fans with her vulnerable and raw lyrics time and time again.
When asked about her album, Mitski replies, “The best thing I ever did in my life was to love people. I wish I could leave behind all the love I have, after I die, so that I can shine all this goodness, all this good love that I’ve created onto other people.”
Her album features 11 tracks, with three singles: “Bug Like an Angel,” “Heaven,” and “Star.” Rolling Stone calls it “a mix of quotidian-yet-elliptical lyricism, classic country accompaniment, daring orchestral movements, and the musician’s unique brand of storytelling.”
The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We is similarly emotional as Mitski’s previous albums. Still, it veers to a more folk Americana sound, a genre she has occasionally explored.
Mitski’s lead single, “Bug Like an Angel,” touches on solemn themes, such as alcohol dependence and religious reflection. The featured gospel choir adds depth and ardor to her tender lyrics.
My personal favorite tracks are “Buffalo Replaced,” “Heaven,” and “When Memories Snow.” Fans of softer, tear-jerking music should check out The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. Mitski’s music continues to reach people of all ages and backgrounds thanks to her meaningful lyricism.
