Shippensburg Routes Huskies on Halloween Night
Bloomsburg Pa.—The Shippensburg University Raiders had their way with Bloomsburg on Thursday night. In a 34-18 upset over the fifth ranked team in Division 2, the Raiders posted 549 yards of total offense, including 466 passing yards from senior quarterback Zach Zulli. The Husky defense struggled to contain Zulli’s wide receivers from start to finish, as junior wide-out Sheldon Mayer recorded six catches for 244 yards and two touchdowns. This loss marked the third time in the last two seasons, (including the postseason) that the Raiders have defeated Bloomsburg.
On offense that struggled to get anything going all night, senior running back Franklyn Quiteh ran for 82 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, setting a new PSAC record for carries with 956. He also tied the PSAC record for touchdowns with 85, tying former Husky running back Jamar Brittingham. In the fourth quarter, Quiteh appeared to injure his left shoulder while blocking on a play. He remained down for a minute or two, before walking off of the field on his own power.
Redshirt sophomore Tim Kelly struggled throughout the entire game, completing only 12 of 32 passes for 152 yards and an interception.
Redshirt junior Tony Peregin caught a career-high five passes for 70 yards on the night. Senior receiver Glen Hutton Jr., normally a deep-ball threat for the Huskies, was limited to only two catches for 37 yards.
On defense, redshirt senior defensive back J.P. Patrick recorded six total tackles and an interception. Senior linebacker and captain Justin Shirk led the team with 14 total tackles and a sack. Graduate student and defensive end Larry Webster recorded four tackles and 1.5 sacks.
The lone bright spot for Bloomsburg was freshman kick returner Lawrence Elliot Jr., who returned five kickoffs for 183 yards. Elliot Jr. put the Huskies into great field position, midway through the third quarter, with an 86-yard return. The true freshman has explosive speed and exceptional field vision, and should be a force for years to come.
Senior kicker Danny Fisher connected on his only field goal attempt of the game, a 28-yard kick in the second quarter. The Huskies’ next game will be Saturday, Nov. 9 on the road against West Chester. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
