Obama vs Romney Educational Plan for the Future
Many college students feel that education will be a deal breaker for them when it comes time to make their vote in this year’s presidential election.
Presidential candidates, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, have very different stand points when it comes to the issue of education. Many college students feel that education will be a deal breaker for them when it comes time to make their vote in this year’s presidential election.
“I am all for Obama’s plan to make college more affordable for students,” said senior public relations major, Amanda Davis, of Bloomsburg University, “He’s trying to help college students and give them the financial support they need to succeed without trying to drown them in debt.”
President Barack Obama has an educational plan to help make college education more affordable for students through increases to the Pell Grant, and giving incentives to schools who keep tuition reasonable. According to csmonitor.com, Mitt Romney plans to make more cuts to discretionary spending, and if this plan goes through, the cut would be about 115 billion dollars from preK-12 and higher education over 10 years.
Davis, 21, said she will definitely vote for Obama because she believes in his view of helping students get not only a proper education but an affordable one. She wears an Obama pin nearly every day to show her support.
“Romney doesn’t want to help finance loans for college students, he just wants to cut back on college funding and increase college tuition,” Davis said. “Obama is for the people—and I just love that.”
“Romney seems a bit disconnected with the average Americans. He doesn’t seem to want to help people with their financial adversity,” said Johnson, 20.
Johnson attended three different schools, one of which was the Art Institute of Philadelphia, but he unfortunately had to drop out due to problems with getting financial aid. He now owes the school money and is currently working at Cricket Wireless to help pay off his debt.
“Obama has a great educational plan in line for the future,” said Johnson. “He plans to help students get more federal support so they can afford college. Romney’s response about college education was to ‘borrow from your parents,’ how does that help?”
A few months ago Mitt Romney attended a conference and was asked how he will help make college education more affordable for students, he responded saying to “Shop around” and “Borrow money from your parents.”
According to the Whitehouse.gov, Obama proposes that he will create incentives for states and colleges to keep the costs under control through a 1 billion dollar investment. Obama already created a plan, known as “The Race to the Top,” back in 2009, but Obama hopes to continue this incentive in hopes that colleges will hop on for the change, and any state or school that does will be rewarded.
“I have student loans and I know that my parents aren’t going to be able to put my sister through college,” said Tia Franzone, a junior public relations major at BU.
“I can’t expect them to pay for me, and I’m going to have to start paying the loans back six months after I graduate, so for Romney to say borrow money from your parents is absolutely outrageous,” said Franzone.
Obama and Romney have their own plan for the future regarding the problem of education. However, education is just one of the many issues these presidential candidates have to face throughout this presidential election. Many college students feel Obama is for the people and Romney is not, but only the ballots will tell who will come on top in this year’s election.
