Help End Domestic Violence in Bloomsburg!

Imagine being in a relationship that starts out really great, but then everything goes wrong. One day you go from getting tender embraces and loving words from your partner to explosive tempers and physical violence.
It’s not as simple as, “why don’t you just leave?”
The number one reason victims often stay in these relationships is because they are financially abused. Financial abuse is just one form of domestic violence, but one of the most common forms of abuse that keeps victims in their relationship. Abusive partners don’t allow their partner to have financial freedom, often controlling their freedom by withholding money or preventing them from opportunities to gain financial independence. Through this abusive manipulation, victims often can’t leave because they don’t have the resources to support themselves especially if they have children they need to support. Facing financial insecurity on top of physical violence traps victims.
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the National Collation Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), one in four women and one in four men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime in the United States. These statistics are just the reported victims. Many acts of violence like domestic abuse, rape and sexual assault are often unreported.
To combat domestic violence, especially financial abuse, the Women’s Center and Bloomsburg University organizations are raising money and awareness through the Purple Purse Campaign.
The Purple Purse Campaign, sponsored by the Allstate Foundation, wants to provide the resources to help victims escape and become financially independent. With a simple donation, you can make a difference in helping someone walk away from an abusive relationship and help end domestic violence.
The Women’s Center, located on 111 Market St. in Bloomsburg, Pa. is a resource to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault since 1978. Regardless of gender, the center has provided a variety of services ranging from legal and medical advocacy, group and individual counseling as well as offering shelter.
