Constitutional Freedoms Film Series at BU
The Frederick Douglass Institute and American Democracy Project will be presenting several films at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania in the
near future. Each one highlights a major event in United States history, and will be completely free and open to the public.
The films will all be shown in Hartline Science Center, room G42 at 6:15 p.m. on their respective designated dates. Films to be shown are as follows:
“All the President’s Men” – Thursday, Feb. 21
A political thriller based on the non-fiction book of the same name, written by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the two journalists who investigated
the Watergate scandal for The Washington Post. Starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman.
“Amistad” – Wednesday, March 6
Steven Spielberg’s historical drama based on the true story of the 1839 uprising of African slaves aboard the ship La Amistad on its way to the United
States. Starring Morgan Freeman and Matthew McConaughey, and Andy Hopkins.
“Milk” – Tuesday, March 26
An Academy Award-nominated biographical film about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. It details his foray into San Francisco and his struggle for gay rights. Starring Sean Penn, James Franco, Josh Brolin, and Emile Hirsch.
“Recount” – Thursday, April 11
This film is about the 2000 United States presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore. When the initial tallies from Florida voting polls
prove inconclusive, the decision is made to hold a recount. But it’s a controversial decision to say the least, and one that caused many skeptical voters to suspect foul play.
“Lincoln” – Monday, April 29
The critically acclaimed 2012 film by Steven Spielberg starring Daniel Day-Lewis as U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. It covers the last four months of Lincoln’s life, focusing on his efforts in January 1865 to pass the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and outlaw slavery.
