In Delano Township on Feb. 17, an accident occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m., due to a winter hazard known as a “snow squall.” A van had crashed and then rolled onto its passenger side along I-81 on mile marker 135.1, ejecting both of its passengers. One of the ejected passengers was run over by at least one vehicle seconds after the accident occurred. The male passenger, who had been thrown into the middle of I-81, was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m., on the scene by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner David Truskowsky. Schuylkill EMS, Fire, and Police had arrived within five minutes of the accident and were then assisted by Delano, Ryan, and McAdoo Township firefighters. The other passenger was found lying on an embankment behind the van quoted from authorities as “suffering from life threatening injuries.”

At about 9:15 p.m., a helicopter descended onto mile marker 135.3 to evacuate the surviving accident victim and lifted off approximately 9:45 p.m. in the direction of Reading Hospital where the person remains in critical condition.

The identities of either victims have not yet been released.

The shoulder of I-81 was announced clear at 10:18p.m., but traffic was still at a standstill for an additional two to three hours.
