Bloomsburg University student Edward Heckler, 23, of Audubon, Pa was found dead early Saturday morning from a suspected overdose.

The Press Enterprise reported Heckler was found by police at 71 Iron St., along with three others who were unconscious. Rescuers were summoned around 2:15 a.m.

Emergency medical responders unsuccessfully administered several doses of Narcan, a medication used to reverse an opioid overdose, in an attempt to save Heckler. The three others were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Bloomsburg Police Chief Scott Price said he suspects the drug that caused the overdose may have been laced with fentanyl, a synthetic opioid similar to morphine but 50-100 times more powerful.

Price stated the incident is still under investigation and the person or persons responsible for giving the drug to Heckler could be charged with “drug delivery resulting in death” which is a felony.

Heckler was loved dearly by his fellow classmates and educators.

Dr. Richard Ganahl, a professor in the Media and Journalism Department remembers, “I had Ed in several classes, most recently last fall. He always participated and was developing as a critical thinker with an independent streak. This is a complete tragedy.”

Our hearts are with Heckler’s family and friends during this time in need.
