BU Earth Day 2023: Nurture your Nature

Bloomsburg University’s Green Campus Initiative and Dr. Hopecks Event Planning class collaborated to host BU’s 2023 Earth Day Celebration on Wednesday April 26th.
Weather allowed earth day to be held on the quad this year, it was a sunny and fun day for university students. There were an array of activities to participate in throughout the day. TRIO Student Support Services were there handing out flower pots for people to paint. PAWs hosted an “aim for healthy choices” ring toss.
NSSHLA was there to teach people how to plant seeds in mini pots and how to take care of them. FBLA collegiate created a scavenger hunt around the quads for students. Kate Billmayer from the student recreation center attended and taught a yoga class on the quad. Many other clubs attended handing out information about their organizations!
“Dirt Pudding”, homemade trail mix, fruit trays, and lemonade were offered using 100% sustainable materials. Mariah Thomas served the community by handing out fruit cups.
Everyone’s favorite Husky, Roongo, also joined the celebrations! He enjoyed participating in activities (the ones that didn’t require opposable thumbs) and interacting with students! He engaged in some yoga, enjoying the downward dog pose.
Earth Day 2023 was sponsored by many generous businesses around Bloomsburg, including Bloomin’ Bagels, Rohrbach’s Farm, Lunar Wolf Shoppe, Weis, The YMCA, and many others!
Students received raffle tickets from each table they visited and were entered to win many great prizes. Over 20 items such as gift cards, shirts and gift baskets were given to the lucky winners!

A new aspect this year that was created by the event planning class was a clothing rack. Throughout the week, students donated clothes and they were displayed at earth day for people to shop through and take free of charge.
Junior, Ava Staples enjoyed the event immensely. “I liked all the different options of stands for the things that help the earth that I may not have even thought about. The thrift rack was super cool and made me realize how much better buying second hand clothes is for the planet.”
Overall, the event was a successful and fun Earth Day for Bloomsburg University. Till next year! Nurture your Nature everyone!
