Broadway Defeats Broad Street to Gain Momentum in Standings

Wednesday was rivalry night for the Philadelphia Flyers as they traveled to Madison Square Garden to take on the New York Rangers. This was a big game for both teams. A win for the Flyers would bump them up to the fifth spot ahead of the Rangers. Meanwhile, a win for the Rangers would give them a three point cushion in the standings.

Philadelphia came out of the gate strong, outshooting the Rangers 15-6 in the opening period. Despite the Flyers best efforts, New York jumped out in front as right wing Derek Dorsett scored to give the Rangers a one goal advantage. Ryan McDonagh scored his 14th goal of the season 5:30 into the second period, to increase the New York lead by two.

In the third period, Dominic Moore’s goal made the score 3-0 in favor of the Rangers. Jakub Voracek finally got Philadelphia on the board by scoring his 21st goal of the season, but that came with only 1:53 remaining in the game. New York proved to be too much for the Flyers to overcome, winning the game, 3-1.

Steve Mason faced 29 shots and made 26 saves while Henrik Lundqvist stopped 30 shots. New York took care of business by winning their fifth consecutive game, while the Flyers lost their second straight game that followed five straight victories.
