The Haas Gallery of Art hosts many different art exhibits throughout the year. Presently featured until October 17, 2009, is the work of Claire Rau in her exhibit Booby Traps. Check out these hand-built objects of menace while they are still available!

The Haas Gallery on campus hosts many different art exhibits throughout the year. Most exhibits are alluring, unique, complex, and thought-provoking. For example, the Haas Gallery is now showing art work by Claire Rau, an Ohio born artist who specializes in scuplture and printmaking. Her exhibit is titled Booby Traps and runs until October 17, 2009.

Rau’s works are inspired by the jungle action movie Predator, and most are variations of booby traps. Her work is an exploration of combat, specifically objects that fall into the categories of anti-personnel devices, hand-to-hand arms, and barriers. Many of the traps are hand built, using simple materials with additions of manufactured parts.

Pictured above is one of three Leg-hold Traps that are made of powder-coated steel, cast plastic, paint, and hardware.

The above work is titled Barrier and is constucted with wood, steel, paint, thread, rope, and hardware.

Rau also creates prints like the one pictured below, titled The Fatted Calf.

Claire Rau was born in Sandusky, Ohio and raised in northeast Tennessee. She completed her graduate work at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill with the installation Body Plunder. She has taught printmaking and sculpture at several institutions and presently teaches at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. She is the recipient of several awards and residencies, including the Book Arts & Printmaking Fellowship at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica (Venice, Italy) in 2006. Claire has exhibited in the U.S. and internationally.
