Bloomsburg Softball Ends its Season with Loss to California (PA)

The Bloomsburg University Softball team’s season came to an end Friday afternoon with a 3-2 loss in eight innings to Kutztown, and a 4-0 loss to California (PA).

In their first game of the day, the Huskies lost 3-2 in eight innings to Kutztown. Senior Cait Paine pitched the entire game and struck out 15 batters, including 12 in a row earlier in the game.

Kutztown scored one run in each of the final three innings to advance past the Huskies. First basemen Colleen Smith drove in the winning run on a single for the Golden Bears.

As a team, Bloomsburg only registered five hits, with Mandi Baer and first basemen Rachel Fredell both homering for Bloomsburg. For Fredell, it was her sixth home run of the year and it was the ninth of the season for Baer.

Against California (PA), Paine again took the loss after going 4.1 innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits. She was replaced by junior Mandi Black, the first Husky to pitch in the tournament other than Paine. Bloomsburg had the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning, but failed to score. The Huskies managed only four hits in the shutout loss.

For the tournament, Paine carried the Huskies by pitching 33.1 out of the 36 possible innings. She struck out 43 batters and gave up only 20 hits.

For the season, Bloomsburg finished with a record of 30-17. Paine finished the year with a record of 17-11 and 274 strikeouts. Sophomore utility player Kayla McHale finished the year with a team-high .416 batting average and 64 hits. Junior infielder Chrissy Belko led the team with 15 home runs and 50 RBI. The Huskies had five players hit over .300 for the year, and they scored 234 runs as a team. They also had 406 hits and 629 total bases as a team.
