Blake Lively’s View on Her Character from Gossip Girl

If we were to ask the female college population what was one of their favorite Netflix series, Gossip Girl would without a doubt come out on top.
While watching the ever so addicting Gossip Girl series, the female population glorified Serena van der Woodsen, played by Blake Lively, for her beauty and fashion. However, Serena’s life throughout the series consisted of many heartbreaks and challenges. Along with these challenges, Serena made some very questionable decisions.
A review from IMDB says, “If you love to see women/girls being portrayed as dumb, materialistic, pathetic and being degrading- well this show is for you.”
Serena went through a time where she slept with her best friend Blair’s boyfriend. From abusing drugs, to dropping out of school, to being the center of drama, she always had something going on.
One thing Serena was known for is her lies and betraying her friends. When the series started off, Serena was returning from a year away at boarding school. When she left for the boarding school, Blair did not know she was going there until it was too late.
Lively told Allure, “People loved it, but it always felt a little personally compromising- you want to be putting a better message out there.”
She also told Allure, “It’s a weird thing when people feel like they know you really well, and they don’t. I would not be proud to be the person who gave someone the cocaine that made them overdose and then shot someone and slept with someone else’s boyfriend.”
Other than for her beauty and fashion, not many of Serena’s actions are ones any teenage girl should look up to. Boston Herald has been quoted calling Gossip Girl, “Every parent’s nightmare.”
However, parenting in Gossip Girl is very different from any parenting tactics I’ve observed throughout my 20 years of life. I have no idea how many parents would allow the drinking and scandalous events that occurred throughout the series to happen at an age of 16.
One thing remains certain, Lively is not happy with the character she portrayed in the series, and girls should not set out to be like Serena.
