Beauty on a Budget: Homemade Hair Care
Need to tame that crazy hair but are on a budget? Well worry no more because here are some helpful and cheap ways that you can get salon quality hair in no time!

Trying to look fabulous everyday can take a major toll on women. The number one victim is our hair. After pulling, straightening, curling, frying, and teasing, our locks will definitely need a lift. Salon products and treatments can get expensive, not to mention they’re extremely time consuming. As students, after classes, meetings, and socializing, we are left without time and money. Well here are some helpful, natural, and most importantly cheap, hair care tips that will be leaving your hair feeling rejuvenated and ready for whatever you throw at it next.
For Dull Hair
After using styling products for a long period of time our hair can be left looking dull and lifeless. All you need to turn your hair’s frown upside down is a cup of sour cream ($1-$2) or a cup of plain yogurt ($1.50-$2.50).
How to use: Gently rub a 1/2 cup to 1 cup of sour cream or yogurt into your hair. Make sure that the scalp and ends are completely covered. Once the hair is saturated thoroughly let it sit for 10-20 minutes . Afterwards, rinse with hot water, followed by cold water, then shampoo as normal, but do not condition. This treatment can be done every other week.
For Dry and Damaged Hair
Over time, weather, hard water, curling irons, and flat irons can start to make the hair brittle and dry. The oils and proteins in mayonnaise ($3-$4) can restore all that was lost, leaving you with silky smooth hair (Caution: Not recommended for thin or oily hair)
How to use: For short hair use 1/4 cup, 1/2 for medium, and a whole cup for long hair. Also, for this treatment you will need a hot, damp towel to ensure that the mayonnaise is evenly applied throughout your hair. Apply the mayo on either dry or wet hair, and run your fingers or a wide-toothed comb, until the hair is completely saturated. Once all of the mayonnaise is completely incorporated, wrap the hair in the towel and let it sit for no more than 10 minutes. Immediately after unwrapping your hair, wash thoroughly with shampoo, again do not condition. This treatment should only be done every one to two months, or as needed.
For Greasy or Oily hair
After staying up for an all-night cram session, waking up late for class, or between washes, your hair can look greasy. The most common remedy is baby powder, although that can sometimes give your hair a grayish look to it if you have darker hair. This next tip will not only eliminate the oil, but will also prevent a powdery appearance, not to mention your hair won’t smell like a baby’s bottom . All you need is some corn flour ($3) and you are good to go!
How to Use: For this, you will need a salt/pepper shaker, or anything that has a cap with small holes. All you have to do is shake the corn flour onto DRY roots and make sure that the head is covered, but make sure not to overdo it. Leave it in your hair for a couple minutes then take a comb and brush it out over a sink or a bathtub. This can be done whenever you’re going somewhere and you don’t have time to take a shower.
So the next time you plan to go to the salon, save yourself time and money by using these homemade remedies. Just follow these tips and your hair will be looking flawless in no time! Remember, you don’t need to have a lot of money in the bank to look like a million bucks.
