A reported gunman at American University was found to be an off-duty police officer, lifting the lock down on campus.
University Public Safety officials began circulating a picture of the once-suspected gunman after a student reported a man wearing a gun holster at approximately 7:55 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11. Washington DC police along with a helicopter were then dispatched to AU in an almost 90-minute hunt for the suspect. The man and woman in the photograph are now identified as the police officer and his girlfriend apparently on a shuttle bus, as reported by ABC News.
“Every student is safe tonight. In this case, someone saw something and said something. The system worked,” Camille Lepre, a spokeswoman for AU, said in a statement.
