After being in jail for 30 days for charges of kidnapping, rape and murder, Arial Castro was found hung in his jail cell on September 3, 2013.
Castro was facing a sentence of life plus a 1,000 years, without chance of parol for holding Amanda Berry, Georgina “Gina” DeJesus, and Michelle Knight, captive for years. Castro committed what many view as his final act of selfishness at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio.
Castro was checked on at 9:00pm. Only 20 minutes later he was found hanging.
Castro was put on precautionary watch upon arrival, which meant he was checked on every half hour. Castro was of high profile so the guards wanted to watch him but there was doubt Castro would be a threat to himself.
When Castro was first detained for his crimes in Cleveland, he was put on suicide watch and was checked on every 10 minutes. If this would have still been enacted at the state jail maybe Castro may have still been alive serving his sentence.
The women who were Castro’s victims wanted to see Castro live through his sentence in jail. Some people could argue the girls will be at peace now that he is dead. When I asked 3 women in their late teens that attend Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania how they would feel, they agreed that if they were in that position, they “…would want him to rot in jail.”
