Andy Rooney, ’60 Minutes’ Commentator, Dies at 92
Emmy Award winning writer dies of complications of undisclosed surgery
Memorable commentator from the CBS program, “60 Minutes” and Emmy Award winner, Andy Rooney, died at the age of 92 Friday, Nov. 4 from complications of an undisclosed surgery. Known for adding new perspective and questioning everyday things, Rooney died just a month after delivering his 1097th commentary. Rooney’s commentaries varied from things like the Super Bowl to the old clothes in his closet.
Rooney won his four Emmy’s for a piece he did on whether there was actually a Mrs. Smith behind Mrs. Smith’s Pies.
“I obviously have a knack for getting on paper what a lot of people have thought and didn’t realize they thought,” Rooney once said. “And they say, ‘Hey, yeah!’ And they like that.”
Looking for something new to liven up its broadcast, “60 Minutes” first aired the show on July 2, 1978. Rooney complained about people who keep track of how many people die in car accidents on holiday weekends.
Jeff Fager, CBS News chairman and “60 Minutes” executive producer, told MSNBC that “It’s hard to imagine not having Andy around. He loved his life and he lived it on his own terms. We will miss him very much.”
On his final segment, Rooney said that he’d lived a life luckier than most.
“I wish I could do this forever. I can’t, though,” he said.
