Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s art and art history department, in partnership with Art21 Inc., presents a sneak preview of the fifth season of “Art:21 – Art in the 21st Century,” on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 4:30 p.m. in Old Science Hall, room 122. This Art21 Access ’09 event is free and open to the public.

The themed episode, “Systems,” features four contemporary artists: John Baldessari, Kimsooja, Allan McCollum and Julie Mehretu. Each artist examines why people find comfort in some systems and rebel against others as they convey the attitudes of today’s information-based society. The episode will share the inspiration, vision and techniques behind the artists’ complex creative works through in-depth profiles and interviews. “Art:21 – Art in the 21st Century” is the only prime time national television series focused exclusively on contemporary art.

“We hope audiences will take full advantage of the events in their area and develop an understanding of the complex skills, techniques and knowledge that artists bring to their work. Our goal is that these events contribute to boosting the confidence of audiences worldwide to view and appreciate all art forms,” said Susan Sollins, executive producer.

Faculty from BU’s art and art history department will continue the conversation with a question-and-answer panel discussion immediately following the preview screening.

Art21 Access ’09 events are presented in partnership with Americans for the Arts as part of National Arts and Humanities Month each October. For more information on BU’s program, contact Sue O’Donnell, assistant professor of art and art history, (570) 389-4646.
