A Hollywood Split Even We Didn’t See Coming

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton have deciding to go their separate ways after more than 20 years together and nearly nine years of marriage. As the first to confirm the news, People Magazine released a joint statement from the duo on Feb. 24, “We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time.” The two welcomed a son together, 3 year-old Julian Fuego, April of 2010.
From Thicke and Patton’s constant PDA in the public eye, especially on the red carpets, and their continuous support and affection to each other, a separation was the last thing we thought was in store for them. When the celebs sat down for an interview with Prestige magazine for their September issue, the Blurred Lines singer, who was just 14 when he and Patton met, revealed, “I don’t know if I would still be alive in some ways if it wasn’t for for Paula.” The “About Last Night” actress then spilled, “I’ve been there for his down moments and he’s been there for mine.” The genetically gifted stars certainly do not fail to deliver heart-dropping moments on and off the big screen and the stage.
The now exes, were last seen showing off their usually PDA at this years Grammy Awards Jan. 26, looking happier than ever. But was there trouble stirring for a while before the split? Lets hit rewind on this unexpected partition. The first sign could have been when the controversial music video for Blurred Lines came out featuring topless women cozying up to the Patton’s hubby. However, it was quickly taken down by YouTube for being too hot. But after the videos release, coming to the defense, E! News reports the actress stated, “I watched the video and I was a little bit jealous and then I wanted to jump his bones, I was like, I want to take you down’ That’s how I know its a hit.”
Then fast forward to the the MTV Video Music Awards when Miley Cyrus and Thicke gave the most talked about performance of the century. Cyrus let it all hang out while she “twerked” her way up and down the stage with the 36 year-old singer. Then again, Patton stuck by her partners side when she said, “It doesn’t affect me anymore at all,” during a sit-down interview with E! News hosts, Giuliana Rancic and Terrence Jenkins. The 38 year-old actress gushed, “It was just so funny because when I saw him perform I was like ‘You guys killed it!’ We hugged each other, we went out, celebrated. The next day my cell phone [has] all these texts: ‘Praying for you.’ ‘If you need to talk to me, I’m here.’” She went on to talk about how it was not a big deal and all of her friends dance on her man like that.
Like a domino effect of unfortunate events, as soon as the VMA’s were over a photo of Thicke’s hand on a woman’s behind rapidly made its way through the internet. A source quickly turned to E! to reveal at the time that the photo was a “non-issue” between the couple. Not long after the photo Patton was not present for, he made an appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s series, Next Chapter and explained how him and Patton keep their relationship alive, with nothing but great things to spill to Winfrey. The multi-talented musician even said, “I would be lost without her.”
The scandalous rumors were not over yet. This past Jan. what seemed like just another performance at a nightclub in Paris, turned out to be quite the risque after party. E! News reported the up close and personal encounter with a stunning female at Club 79 in Paris had Thicke acting like he was not married. As the two were getting comfortable, the brunette female dressed in a skin-tight black top, got close to the singer, touched his cheek and appeared to whisper something in his ear E! explained.
Sources believe the split could be due to the demanding schedules of the two celebs. Their careers are taking off right now with Patton filming her newest project, Warcraft, in Vancouver and Thicke currently on the Blurred Lines North America Tour. Things got a little mysterious when the singer suddenly canceled three consecutive shows Feb. 20, because he apparently lost his voice, E! News confirmed. Then Feb 21. Patton told Thicke she wanted to end their marriage, so Thicke flew to Vancouver in an attempt to save their relationship (and this is reportedly the main reason why the singer canceled his shows) a source tells E!.
It seems as though Thicke and Patton’s relationship could have been on the rocks for a while before announcing the separation. With questionable events and quick defense statements it could have been playing out in the public eye and hopelessly devoted fans just refused to believe it. The two seem to be holding up just fine following their hard times. E! learned that the former Mrs. Thicke managed to squeeze in some pampering time while working hard on her next film and the newly single singer was spotted at Disneyland with their precious son. Thicke did reach out to fans on his website. He stated, “I want to thank everyone for well wishes these last few days..My fans mean everything to me. I am looking forward to getting back on out on the road and performing in Washington D.C. this Thursday, and the rest of the tour.”
