A 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey earlier today. According to USA Today, “At least 60 [people are] dead.” Numerous buildings have fallen to the ground. CNN-Turk Television has been continually running coverage of the devastation, showing many people going in after civilians that are trapped and cannot get out alone.
MSNBC.com reported, “The quake hit Turkey’s mountainous eastern region at 1:41 p.m. with an epicenter in the village of Tabanli, 10 miles (17 kilometers) from Van, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.” Now, it is feared that over 1,000 people are dead. Although not yet confirmed, with the living conditions in Turkey, near the Iranian border, Turkish scientists have predicted that many more
people are dead than we know of currently.Ercis, the hardest hit area of this quake, is a city comprised of over 75,000 people. MSNBC.com reported that U.S. scientists have recorded eight aftershocks. Some of those aftershocks coming in magnitudes of 5.6 magnitudes; still, extremely powerful quakes.People dead, buildings in ruins, and the people of Turkey in a state of panic, makes for a very sad time in that part of the world.
