The suspense is over. Apple has officially announced all of their newest and brightest ideas to enhance the technology world at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday, June 8, in San Francisco.

Senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, joked with the audience, “How do you name the 10th version of OS X? We’re running out of cat names.” He revealed the future OS X versions will be California themed starting with Mavericks, referring to a California surfing spot.

For Mac users concerned with battery life, a 1.5x faster wake from standby mode will increase battery life. The new line of MacBook Airs, available today, will feature all-day battery life.

What is the main point of interest for Apple users with the new OS X? Increased convergence. Apple has made it all the more easier for users with multiple Apple devices to go from device to device, making everything accessible from any device at any time.

Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design, Jony Ive, received a standing ovation from developers upon the announcement of the new iOS 7 interface that responds to movement. Cook describes the next iOS as “the biggest change since the iPhone.” The change is like getting a new phone but one you already know how to use as described by Federighi.

The design of iOS 7 has changed dramatically. Apple’s slogan for the new design is “When something is designed to work beautifully, it tends to look that way too.” On Apple’s website, they state that they have been approaching designing their iOS the wrong way, never designing anything with the intention of looking beautiful. Ultimately, the goal of iOS 7 “Was to create an experience that was simpler, more useful, and more enjoyable – while building on the things people love about iOS.” The biggest design difference is space. Each screen looks less cluttered, keeping it very simple.

While Apple has gotten rid of most of the clutter on the screen, they have made the weather app more like looking out your window and a lot less like checking the weather on your phone. Depending on the weather, you could have storm clouds raining down, snowflakes falling, or some bright sun shining down on your screen.

All of the necessities are at the tips of your fingers. Just a swipe up of the finger from any screen will allow the user to access airplane mode, Bluetooth, wi-fi, screen brightness, do not disturb, orientation lock, music controls, flashlight, timer, calculator, or camera.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so why not have a thousand features too, right? Apple is heading in that direction. The last iOS introduced the panorama feature while this update introduces the capability to take square photos. Sound familiar? Apple seems to be taking on Instagram with this new photo format as well as the introduction of filters. Users will be able to choose from eight filters to add to their photos. With the enhancement of photo viewing as well, users will be able to view photos as collections, moments, and years which will groups photos based on time and location. AirDrop will make sharing these photos even simpler by allowing users to easily press the share button to send to anyone nearby.

Siri has expanded to the other gender. Users now have the option of a female or a male voice. Siri will have a faster response time, be easierto understand, use more resources, and perform new tasks including returning calls, playing voicemail, controlling iTunes Radio, and more. Another change for Siri includes a makeover. Siri now will fade into view on top of the user’s current screen. Audio waves will move across the screen to alert users that Siri is processing the user’s request.

With Apple’s introduction of a service to stream digital music will Pandora loose its popularity? iTunes Radio will be a radio-like streaming of music based on the user’s interest. To increase sales, integrated “buy” buttons will encourage users to download the song being streamed also adding convenience for users wishing to purchase the song.

Always forgetting your passwords? The new iCloud Keychain service will solve your problem by remembering key chains and passwords. It will even generate a unique password for you and remember it every time you create a new account. Additionally, iCloud will store your credit card information to save users from the hassle of typing it in for every online purchase. These features work across all Apple devices running iOS 7 or OS X Mavericks.

Planning a trip? OS X Mavericks will allow users to look up travel times between locations on the calendar. The travel time will even be added to the calendar.

Google Drive is faced with some new competition as well with the integration of iCloud and iWork. Previously, iCloud was only a syncing service while iWork was meant for creating. With iWork for iCloud, users can create documents with editing capability. These documents can be created and edited from any computer, Mac or Windows, by using a web browser.

While Apple has not failed to impress many of its users, others were disappointed in the lack of new hardware and devices. Will the arrival of the new iOS come with the introduction of a new iPhone in the fall? Until then, Apple users will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of new features in the updated software.

Pennsylvania ranks number 40 in the 50 states and the District of Columbia where 1 is the highest and 51 is the lowest in rates of teen pregnancies according to the U.S. Office of Health and Human Services office of Adolescent Health.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, Pennsylvania does not require sexual education be taught to its students, nor does it require the information to be medically accurate. It also does not require the information to be separate from religious beliefs.

According to several students and educators in the Crestwood School District, students take sexual education in 9th grade, roughly around the ages of 14 or 15.

Kasey Rogers, now a sophomore at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and graduate of the class of 2011, said this age is too late in a student’s life to be introduced to sexual education.

“The fact is kids start experimenting before high school. Everyone should know about contraception, STDS/STIS , consent, all of that, before they hit puberty,” Rodgers said.

Wyatt Mitchell also a graduate of the Class of 2011, and a native of Baltimore, said that his school taught sex education in 5th grade which he feels has led him to make more informed sexual decisions.

“ I don’t think I’ve ever had sex without a condom,” Mitchell said, also including that school was really his only method of sexual education.

Debbie Macri, a health and physical education teacher said that she believes sex education should always be part of the discussion, but should be appropriate for the student’s chronological and emotional age.

“There are still students who don’t want to hear or discuss anything regarding sexual content. Few students believe that they know everything about sex education. There are some students that want to learn about sex education,” Macri said.

Alison Carr, a health and physical education teacher at Crestwood middle school says although some students are still immature to handle the nature of such an adult topic, she thinks it should be introduced earlier.

“A part of me wishes Crestwood would have health education starting earlier so that we could have introduced sex education sooner,” Carr said. “I also hear many conversations mostly ones I wish I didn’t hear about what was going on in the building and what happened after school parties.”

Rogers admits to having sex at a young age, and although she says she believes it should have been taught earlier, she thinks that sex education clears up a lot of myths and is helpful.

“There’s a lot of misinformation floating around among young people. Sex ed gives them a reliable source of real facts, instead of having to rely on their peers or the internet,” Rogers said.

Pennsylvania’s sexual education curriculums may need some adjusting over time, but they seem to be heading in the right direction.

Next: How a lack of sexual education changed the life of an ordinary high school student into a teenage mother.

NBA Finals Preview

After nine months of thrilling basketball, it has come down to two teams to fight for the title of NBA champion. The San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat will compete in one last best-of-seven series to determine who the top team in the NBA is. Both teams have persevered through various challenges, opponents and injuries to reach this point. Everything will be left on the court as both Miami and San Antonio look to hold the storied Larry O’Brien trophy. Here is my preview and prediction for the NBA Finals.

How they got here:

Miami:

1st round: Defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 4-0

Conference Semifinals: Defeated the Chicago Bulls 4-1

Conference Finals: Defeated the Indiana Pacers 4-3

San Antonio:

1st round: Defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 4-0

Conference Semifinals: Defeated the Golden State Warriors 4-2W

Conference Finals: Defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 4-0

Overview

Miami Heat: For the third straight season, the Heat finds themselves in the NBA Finals. This time around, it was an even tougher and more physical road to get back to the finals. After cruising to the conference finals, Miami was confronted with a tough, gritty Indiana Pacers team. They pushed the Heat around all series long, keeping them out of the paint, and out of rhythm. However, LeBron James and company were able to keep pushing forward and win game seven in Miami.

San Antonio Spurs: Some things just never change. After their 14th straight 50 win season, and 16th straight postseason appearance, the Spurs are once again playing in the NBA Finals. Led by the ever so familiar core of Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan, San Antonio is playing their best basketball of the season. They recently swept the Memphis Grizzlies in the conference finals and will be well rested for Miami. The Spurs offense has been very efficient lately, shooting over 50% as a team in three of the four games against Memphis. San Antonio is one of the few model franchises in the NBA, and they have been for a long time. Head coach Greg Popovich has implemented an almost perfect, balanced system in which his players truly come together and play as a team.

Key Players:

Kawhi Leonard (Small Forward, Spurs) – Leonard’s growth as a player over the last year has been one of the keys to the Spurs winning games. He is an athletic, two-way player that will guard LeBron James for most of the series. He will need to keep the regular season MVP in check in order for San Antonio to succeed. Leonard, who has hit almost 42% of his three pointers through the first three rounds, will need to continue the strong shooting from behind the arc to keep the Spurs offense rolling.

Manu Ginobili (Shooting Guard, Spurs) – The Argentinian sharp shooter will need to regain his stroke if the Spurs are going to take home their fifth NBA title. Coming off a series in which he scored 9.8 points per game and shot only 36%, Ginobili will have to provide a much more efficient scoring punch off of the bench against Miami. The sixth man for San Antonio will be one of the most important pieces for the team, as he will be counted on to not only score, but guard Heat shooting guard Dwayne Wade.

Chris Anderson (Center, Heat) – The “Birdman” as he is known to many in the NBA, will need to provide a strong defensive presence inside for Miami in this series. Anderson’s main role will be to guard and disrupt the rhythm of Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter in the post during the 20-25 minutes he is out on the floor. Amazingly enough, Anderson has shot an astounding 83% on his field goal attempts during this years’ playoffs.

Dwayne Wade (Shooting Guard, Heat) – It’s surprising he’s on this list rather than someone like Norris Cole or Mario Chalmers. Based on his play in the conference finals, the two time champion is the biggest key player in this series. His knee injuries have been well documented during these playoffs, but against the Pacers, Wade looked like a man who had lost any confidence he had in his offensive game. He was timid, taking ill-advised shots and missing shots he usually makes. In order for Miami’s offense to flow, Wade will need to regain that confidence and shooting stroke.

Outlook: This will be a fun series to watch. These teams play slightly different styles, with the Heat preferring to give the ball to either James or Wade, and the Spurs priding themselves on ball movement. One of the biggest things to watch early on will be how San Antonio plays after 10 days off versus Miami, who has been playing basketball up till the finals. However, the big thing that does weigh in the Spurs favor is that they have been able to sit back, get healthy and watch every move and adjustment that the Heat made in the series against Indiana. Nothing will surprise Tim Duncan and company, and the Spurs will use their size and ball movement to keep the Heat off balance. Also, Duncan is 4-0 in the NBA Finals. It’s hard to pick against the Big Fundamental. San Antonio wins 4-2.

NBA Finals Schedule

Game 1 in Miami: Thursday, June 6, (9 p.m.)

Game 2 in Miami: Sunday, June 9, (8 p.m.)

Game 3 in San Antonio: Tuesday, June 11, (9 p.m.)

Game 4 in San Antonio: Thursday, June 13, (9 p.m.)

Game 5 in San Antonio: Sunday, June 16, (8 p.m.)

Game 6 in Miami: Tuesday, June 18, (9 p.m.)

Game 7 in Miami: Thursday, June 20, (9 p.m.)

Prankster shop owners give free shower to violators caught urinating

What would you do if passers-by continuously used your business as an outhouse? After countless strangers publicly urinated on the building of a Pennsylvania locksmith business, the fed-up owners decided to take matters into their own hands.

The owners installed a motion detector and surveillance camera behind the building. Every time someone was in the back alley, the motion detector would alert the owners. At the sound of the chime, the owners would take a look at the video surveillance and turn a valve that is connected to a high-pressure water line leading outside and accurately aimed to make sure that the “pisser is given a free shower.”

With plans to upgrade their vigilante system, these pranksters may be having a little too much fun. Although they hope to stop the violators, the shop owners would like to remain anonymous. Take a look at the pranksters in action in this hilarious video that is catching national media attention.

Pet Peeves: Everyone has them, and they drive us crazy. One of mine is grammar. I may be a little old fashioned compared to the average college student, as I hate most slang and abbreviations. Please do not ever send me a text message containing any of the following: smh, lmao, omw, np, etc. I can’t stand seeing that I misspelled a word in a text message or email right after I hit send. If I find a grammatical error in one of my tweets, I’ll automatically delete it. Sometimes the 140-character rule on twitter kills me when I have to sacrifice perfect grammar by getting rid of a couple apostrophes or commas in order to shorten my tweet. Clearly, grammar can drive me crazy. But here are just a few of the common grammatical errors that make me cringe:

1. Literally

Admit it, we’ve all used this one incorrectly. How many times have you said, “I’m laughing so hard I’m literally peeing my pants”? But how many times have you truly peed your pants? Hopefully you’re just using the word incorrectly because literally is defined as “actually, with without exaggeration or inaccuracy.” We may have more of a problem than just your grammar if you are literally peeing your pants whenever you laugh.

2. Couldn’t Care Less

Most people say “I could care less” which in reality, actually means the exact opposite of what they intend.

3. Your/ You’re

Your = possession. You’re = you are. It’s really not that difficult.

4. May As Well

We’re not talking about possession. It’s a common tendency for people to say “mine as well” instead of “may as well.” But the word mine, if properly used, denotes possession.

5. Supposed To/ Used To

Don’t forget the ‘D.’ I get it; we live in a generation that loves to shorten words. But you are changing the tense of the word. Try to avoid saying, “I was suppose to” or “I use to.”

6. Take For Granted

People commonly misuse the phrase by saying “take for granite” rather than saying ”take for granted.” Unless you are remodeling your kitchen, you probably have no use for taking any granite.

7. Their/ There/ They’re

This one isn’t that difficult to differentiate either. Their = possession. There = position, point, or place. They’re = they are.

According to multiple reports, Notre Dame starting quarterback, Everett Golson, is ineligible for at least the 2013 fall semester because of “poor academic judgment.”

As of Friday, Golson was reportedly not enrolled in the university. Golson released a statement Sunday, stating, “I take full responsibility for my poor choices and will do all that is asked of me to regain the trust of my family, friends, teammates, coaches and the entire Notre Dame community.”

Coming off of a 12-1 season and a run to the national title game, this will be a huge blow for the Fighting Irish. Golson completed 58.8% of his passes for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman last year. He also ran for 298 yards and six touchdowns; showcasing his ability to move around the pocket.

The possible replacements for Golson are senior Andrew Hendrix, who has no career starts, freshman Malik Zaire, and senior Tommy Rees, with the latter being the probable choice. Rees has thrown for 4,413 yards, 34 touchdowns and 24 interceptions during his first three years at Notre Dame. Unfortunately for the Irish, he does not have the mobility that Golson has, rushing for -71 yards in his career.

Stay tuned for more updates to the situation.

With the NBA playoffs halfway done, upsets continued in the second round, with Memphis defeating Oklahoma City, and Indiana defeating New York. This round will feature appearances by teams that have not made it to the conference finals in several years. Memphis will be making their first conference finals appearance. This should set up for some exciting basketball as we head into summer. The games will start the week of May 19and continue through the week of May 26. Here are my predictions and analysis for the NBA Conference Finals.

Eastern Conference (Begins May 22):

Miami Heat vs. Indiana Pacers/ New York Knicks

Things to think about going in:

Miami: After losing game in one to the depleted Chicago Bulls, the Miami Heat turned up the energy to win the next four. They managed to score only 97 points per game in the series, and LeBron James managed only 23.6 points and shot only 41% for the series. Miami will face a much better offensive and defensive team in the Indiana Pacers, so they need to be ready to step up to the challenge. Their offense will need to be more efficient if they hope to keep advancing in the playoffs.

Indiana: After upsetting the New York Knicks, the Indiana Pacers will face a much better defensive team in the Miami Heat, which means they will have to be on their game and executing on offense. They have all the tools to contain James and Dwayne Wade, with forward Paul George and Lance Stephenson being their best perimeter defenders. Look for Indiana to slow things down and not let the Heat get out in transition.

Outlook: This will be a tough and physical series, plain and simple. I think both Wade and James will be held in check and the Pacers’ size will overwhelm the Heat’s front line. Bench play will be key as Indiana had one of the better benches in the league during the regular season. Indiana wins the series 4-2.

Western Conference (Started on May 19):

San Antonio Spurs vs. Memphis Grizzlies

Things to think about going in:

San Antonio: The San Antonio Spurs proved that experience still beats youth any day of the week, defeating the Golden State Warriors in six games. Point guard Tony Parker has shown that he is still one of the elite players at his position, averaging 22.5 points and 6.2 assists per game against the Warriors. Center Tim Duncan also showed he still has some game left by averaging 19.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. The Spurs will have to continue to execute on offense like they do if they hope to get past Memphis’ stingy defense and advance to the NBA Finals.

Memphis: The Memphis Grizzlies continued to shock the world by beating the number one seed Oklahoma City Thunder. The Grizzlies showed the entire NBA how blue collar and team basketball is played, shutting down the league’s best scorer in Kevin Durant. Memphis was led by their trio of Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol and Mike Conley Jr. Randolph averaged 18.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, and the Grizzlies are the only team in the postseason with three scorers in the top 20 of the league.

Outlook: I expect a very competitive series with low scoring and defensive battles. Experience will factor in, as the Spurs play in their eight conference finals in 15 years, while the Grizzlies will be in their first in franchise history. This will be a back and forth series with both teams playing hard and smart. San Antonio wins the series 4-2.

The death toll of Monday’s tornado is up to 91 people including 20 children. Hospitals were flooded by those injured in the tornado. There are 145 people reported injured by hospitals, half of which are children. Rescue workers continue to struggle to get through the debris to rescue those who are still trapped beneath. After the Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore as crushed to a pile of rubble, rescue workers were able to pull several children out but are having difficulty removing fallen walls and beams to rescue the remaining children. In a telephone interview with New York Times, Sgt Gary Knight said, “Numerous neighborhoods were completely leveled… just wiped clean.”

Less than 20 minutes after the first warning went out, the tornado touched down at 2:56 p.m. and remained on the ground for 40 minutes, traveling 20 miles. Search efforts continued into the night to find those covered by the debris. According to the National Weather Service the winds of the tornado were 166 to 200 mph making it an EF4 tornado, on scale of zero to five classifying it as the second-most severe. KFOR reported the tornado to be at least two miles wide as it struck through Moore. In an interview with CNN, a Moore resident said, “It was just like the movie ‘Twister.’ There were horses and stuff flying around everywhere.”

Not everyone can pledge $1 million to the American Red Cross disaster relief efforts as Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant did. But West Virginia University’s baseball team made sure they were able to make a difference for those affected by the disaster. The team was staying several miles from Moore for this week’s Big 12 championship in Oklahoma. Each team member purchased clothing, food, and other necessities to donate to victims. The efforts of Coach Randy Mazey and the members of the West Virginia baseball team are greatly appreciated by the Moore community.

After another stellar season, LeBron James of the Miami Heat, has been named the NBA’s 2012-2013 Most Valuable Player. This makes it four MVP awards throughout his career and could be well on his way to another appearance in the NBA Finals. James, 28, has become the youngest player to win four MVP awards. James has received 120 out of the 121 first place votes from the league media members and analysts. The lone vote that did not go to James went instead to New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony.

“LeBron gets it, I take my hat off to him, he deserves it,” said Anthony. “They had a helluva year, to win 27 straight games, a hell of an achievement.”

“It’s probably a writer out of New York that didn’t give me the vote,” James said during Sunday’s award ceremony at American Airlines Arena. “I know the history between the Heat and the Knicks. So I get it.”

After winning his fourth award, he now joins the ranks of Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain, as the only players to ever win four MVP awards in NBA history. James and Russell are the only players in NBA history to win the award four times in five seasons.

James is coming off of the most efficient season of his career after scoring nearly 27 points per game. He also averaged a career high in assists and rebounding and looks to carry that momentum into the post season.

After beating the Milwaukee Bucks in four games and the Chicago Bulls in five the Heat see themselves in the Easter conference finals vs. the Pacers. The Heat and Pacers have a history of bad blood and it may continue with a chance to make it to the NBA Finals. The Pacers won the regular season series 2-1. Frank Vogel, head coach of the Indian Pacers said “Miami is just another team in our way to the finals.” James took no time in firing back the head coach stating “we aren’t just any other team, we are a very good team.” This has the making of being a very good series given all that is at stake.

A tragedy feared by the parents of every college student, 21-year-old Matthew Royer never returned home to Montgomery County on Friday. A University of Rhode Island student, Royer was seen leaving his apartment and getting gas at approximately 6:30 p.m. before texting his mother to let her know he was on his way home.

Cell towers last registered his phone on Friday in Lehigh County off Vera Cruz Road near Interstate 78 and Route 309. He was seen on surveillance camera using his debit card to purchase a water and gas at a Sunoco near Route 100 in Coopersburg at 2 a.m. Friday. Royer was still right on schedule at this point in the night but never returned home.

After Royer did not show to work at Skippack Golf Course on Friday, his mother contacted police. Royer’s vehicle, a 2008 silver Chevrolet Cobalt with Pennsylvania license plate “GZR 9059”, was spotted at 1 p.m. Friday in Lebanon County at Route 501 and 422 approximately 30 minutes from his home but still has not returned. Royer’s cell phone stopped working at noon on Saturday.

According to CBS Philly, Matthew Royer is 6’1” 160 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a dark green golf shirt, khaki pants, a beige “Biltmore” baseball cap, and sandals. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Pennsylvania State Police at 610-584-1250 or 911.

Philadelphia man found guilty for the murder of four infants and a woman

Philadelphia doctor, Kermit Gosnell, has been put on trial for the deaths of four infants and a woman at his abortion clinic. Jurors have just released the verdict finding Gosnell guilty for three counts of first-degree murder.

According to CNN, Gosnell, 72, is suspected of killing babies by using scissors to cut the spinal cords. Authorities alleged that some of the infants were born viable and alive during the sixth, seventh, and eighth months of pregnancy.

He also was accused for the death of Karnamaya Mongar, 41, who died while under anesthesia during a second-trimester abortion at his West Philadelphia clinic.

Gosnell, who is not a board-certified obstetrician or gynecologist, could possibly face a death sentence for his crimes. He is also charged with conspiracy, abortion at 24 or more weeks of pregnancy, theft, and corruption of minors, solicitation, and other related offenses. He faces 19 charges, and a total of 263 counts.

Eileen O’Neill, 56, a co-defendant of Gosnell is charged with participating in the operation of a corrupt organization and theft by deception for operating without a license to practice medicine. O’Neill, a medical school graduate, is not charged with performing illegal abortions. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Defense attorney, Jack McMahon, stated in his 2 1/2 hour long closing statement that Gosnell never killed those infants, rather they were already dead after he administered the drug Digoxin, which can cause abortion.

It has also been found that Gosnell reuses unsanitary instruments; performing procedures in filthy rooms, including some that contained litter boxes and animals that were allegedly present at the time. He has also allegedly allowed other unlicensed employees– including a high school student– to administer anesthesia and perform operations.

The remains of the fetuses were stored in water jugs, pet food containers and a freezer at the clinic.

Gosnell preyed on low-income, minority women. McMahon argued that he offered health care to people who were poor and could not afford health insurance.

According to CNN, Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney Edward Cameron, addressed Gosnell by yelling, “Are you human?”

Gosnell smirked at Cameron without speaking. Cameron then continued by saying, “It’s time for us to extinguish the fire he created.”

The doctor was first charged in January 2011.
